Day Three: Faces and Fungus

Today we kicked some ass.  Finished the second lecture on the skull, then we all got down on some serious studying, everyone working together to really get through some of the tougher bits, quizzing each other, etc.  Jon was bringing us out, 5 at a time, for on the spot quizzes where he would drop a fragment in each of our hands and we had to identify it and describe the features in turn.  I got a hyoid body, and then got tripped up on an infant mandible, but hey still got it.During the breaks, with the routine becoming mroe and more familiar, we would meander in groups for coffee, back to the hostel, just really getting into a good groove early on so that in a couple weeks we will be that much further along.  It feels great to have so many like minded individuals.  Dont get me wrong, I love my EWU Anthro Society kids, but these are my bone peeps!  These are the people who don’t bat an eye when I tell them where we got Ophelia’s name from (hint; it sure as shit aint Shakespeare).Went out for what was to be a quick dinner that turned into a three hour ordeal, but the food was tasty, the conversation excellent, and the price reasonable.  It did however make those of us who went mildly late to the night time study session Jon et al put on for us.  So fashionably late, we all hunkered down and instead of the disciplined silence of the morning lecture, it was a cacophony of individual study groups flowing over into others, everyone helping each other and laughing giddily, as learning never need be painful.

 Fungal stew.  My favorite.

Paige didnt have to sit across from me at the table, but she did….now feel the wrath of my Nikon!!!

Robin and Marie behind Garrett.  Not particularly happy with the photo, but Marie makes it very difficult to photograph her, sneaky like that.  Don’t worry.  I’ll get you.

 Ohai!

Jill is a true auteur, likeyoudidntknow

Brian, Poppy, Marie, and Heather were sick of sitting so close to us.

I’ll never understand the French palate, Euro or Quebequois

 Gotsta get them Vlaicu’s, son.

This is the entryway to our bone lab in Transylvania.  I would understand if you thought we were a group of villains.

The study process involves a lot of crossed legs.

 Erik, philosophizing

Tania, putting in the extra work despite being in some pain earlier

Garrett, spreading the word of Garrett to the Garretians

This is what we’re doing.  The skulls of juveniles are a whole ‘nother animal from adult ones.

Dr. Jonathan Bethard, PhD, spreading his buttery knowledge onto the toast of Sabrina

Katie, her look of horror is bloodcurdling

 How many can you identify?

Katie, going the extra mile, with her cranial spelunking gear affixed, does her ritual “Dance of the Left Sphenoid”
