In Spring 2020, it was my great honor to paint this salmon mural in the kids area of the new Tribal Program building. The director had given me a subject matter that folks could agree on, and a color palette.
I created a cartoonishly simplified version of an actual photograph of chinook salmon swimming upstream. Despite their simplicity, I put a lot of time into making sure the correct species was portrayed.
As this was for a children’s play area, I wanted a colorful, wholesome backdrop that didn’t rely on any particular portion to be more important than any other, to allow for TV screens, posters, or signs to cover parts.
I was told it was quite popular.
